Boy With Dyslexia

Letter from Harriet whose son has finished a Tomatis programme in Auckland. She writes:

My name is Harriet Epstein. I have a dyslexic son with audio processing complications. I came across the Tomatis Method a few months ago and was delighted to meet Maria whose work has been invaluable to his progress and development.

I took my son out of school last year and home schooled him for a couple of terms, as the education system was not meeting his needs. I feel very strongly that the Tomatis Method offered by Maria and Fredrik has been an integral part of his progress. (Published with permission.)

Advocate South: Tomatis® Music Therapy for Learning Disorders

Rachel Walker describes how much the Tomatis programme has helped her son Oliver who has a severe developmental delay caused by a rare partial chromosome deletion. The Rotary Club of Fiordland has funded the programme for Oliver whose progress is evident for everyone who knows him.

Oliver’s mother Rachel Walker said she thought that there was nothing to lose but potentially a lot to gain when she first heard about Tomatis therapy. “We noticed a change with Oliver’s speech in the first couple of days, he started to make new sounds” she says.

Tomatis® Sound Therapy for ASD/Autism

william

30 September 2016

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

We had the pleasure of having Pam Mitchell enter our family’s life in 2013, when we were looking for childcare for our two children, William and Jessie. At the time Pam was the visiting teacher for home based childcarers Busy Bodies in Te Anau.

Our son William at the time was 3 and diagnosed with a severe communication disorder and possible ADHD. He required special supervision and had multiple extra services visit him, such as an occupational therapist, speech therapist and early intervention coordinator, while all under the care of a pediatrician. With the help of these services, his home educator Becky, and the guidance of Pam, William started to make some progress.

During 2015, doctors felt that William was exhibiting more markers of ASD (Autism) than previous tests had shown. As William started school in June, Pam approached my husband, Kris, and I about a new therapy that she had researched and trained in. This was Tomatis, a music therapy that was geared to awakening the brain and making new cognitive connections. I considered this alternative medicine, until I spoke with our GP and she said music therapy and physical therapy were some of the only medically proven therapies, that didn’t involve drugs, that helped children on the spectrum.

William began the Tomatis programme during his second term at school. I didn’t think we would make it through one session as William didn’t like things on his head, around his ears or loud music, these things could throw him into a meltdown. I was amazed one day when I arrived to pick him up that he was sound asleep. Within days William had stopped bed wetting, previous visits to an incontinence nurse hadn’t stopped this. He was now sleeping through the night regularly, for the first time in 5 years. He was generally calmer and had longer periods of focus. William’s speech therapist was astounded by the huge advancement in his oral language in the month between visits. After our second round of Tomatis, she felt his oral language skills were now on par with his peers.

After round two, changes weren’t as dramatic, but William was focusing in class better, but still achieving “below’ the national standard. Three months later after our 3rd round of Tomatis, William was now achieving “at” the national standard.

As a trained teacher, I have seen the struggles that many children have with school. The fact that William was now achieving, meant he could further concentrate on developing his social skills and continue to be a happy soul.

Our main goal for William has always been to be raise someone who can be happy in themselves while also positively contributing to society. Tomatis has been one of the non-invasive things that has allowed us to set along this path. The care, patience and passion for this therapy and her clients that Pam gives is another serious contributing factor.

I highly recommend this therapy and Pam Mitchell, to all ASD parents, as we all know there isn’t anything to lose from our children listening to beautiful, peaceful music every day. You will be amazed at the positive changes it will make to your whole family.

Study shows Tomatis® Method reduces stress in university students

office-student-work-study

A study published in the Journal of Psychology in Africa, Volume 26, Issue 1, 2016 has found that the Tomatis® Method is effective in reducing stress and increasing well-being among university students.

Tomatis® Method comparative efficacy in promoting self-regulation in tertiary students: A systematic review

Abstract
This systematic review sought to determine the evidence on how the Tomatis® Method, a sound stimulation intervention for improving listening, compares to other self-regulation interventions with tertiary students. We searched studies from the following data bases ‘Academic FileOne, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Communication & Mass Media Complete, eBook (EBSCOHost), HeinOnline, OAPEN Library, PsychARTICLES, PsychINFO, SocINDEX, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar; and the North-West University repository’ and for the period spanning 2003 to 2013. Studies included for the analysis met these criteria: Published between 2003 and 2013; published and written in English, student participant samples from tertiary institutions such as a universities or colleges; programmes or interventions developed and implemented with a positive effect on well-being or self-regulation; application of the Tomatis® Method in a student population, irrespective of an experimental design. A total of 35 articles met the inclusion criteria. The evidence was thematically analysed using narrative analysis. Findings suggest the Tomatis® Method to be superior to alternative self-regulation approaches in decreasing psychosocial and emotional stressors, as well as enhancing well-being of students. The Tomatis® Method was as effective as alternative approaches in promoting self-awareness and self-monitoring. Alternative methods were more effective than the Tomatis® Method in aspects of critical thinking. The Tomatis® Method appears to compare well with other interventions for the promotion of self-regulation among tertiary students.

Jesse Forrest: A Testimonial on Tomatis Peak Performance

Hear what Jesse Forrest, successful business owner, has to say about his experience with the Tomatis® Method.

I notice myself making better decisions, faster decisions, and taking on bigger projects…

Hi my name is Jesse Forrest I’m a freelance copy writer and a digital agency owner here in Sydney. I met Maria about a year ago and I had a pleasure of meeting Maria and hearing all about her business which is the Tomatis method.

I am someone who is interested in peak performance, getting the most out of my career, and really succeeding in business, and performing my best so I’m always looking at ways to do that. And when I heard about the Tomatis method I was immediately intrigued that as an adult I could go to this training programme just an hour or two a day and subconsciously get so much benefit out of it. At first I was a little bit skeptical; I wasn’t sure how listening to music would really improve my performance at work. But after a number of months of going through the programme I can’t speak highly enough about it.

I notice myself making better decisions, faster decisions, I was taking on bigger projects, I had more opportunities come my way. I was suddenly performing better at work also. And I just felt a great sense of well-being and confidence after going through this programme and its benefits I’m still experiencing today in more than six months after completing the programme.

The Tomatis training method has been just instrumental in my success, it’s allowed me to perform better at work, it’s allowed me to feel more confident on stage when I’m presenting, and generally I just feel happier and have a greater sense of well-being. So if you’re an executive or a business owner or an entrepreneur and you’re looking to get more at business and to achieve more, I can’t recommend the Tomatis method highly enough.

Melanie Vezey: A Testimonial on Dyslexia, Learning and Voice

Listen to Melanie, a mother of two sons with Dyslexia, on her testimony on the Tomatis® Programme.

I’m extremely pleased we found the Tomatis method for our boys but I’m actually pleased that we found it for me as
well.

One of our sons had reading difficulties in school. He just wasn’t able to learn the traditional way that he was being taught even though we had him tested, and he had exceptional hearing and exceptional eyesight. So over the years he was falling behind in his reading and writing and everything at school. Even though the school was trying each year a different method of intervention, a different reading programme, or support and we even tried different programmes on our own but the result was that it left him confused, frustrated and eventually we noticed that his confidence was starting to erode and no parent wants to see that.

I found Maria from an internet search just after a friend had loaned me the book, When Listening Comes Alive and I just glanced through it quickly and the few points I read I knew that this was something that I had to research.

So I found Maria online, she answered the phone and it turns out that they were just unpacking their boxes from having moved to New Zealand. So I was as pleased to find her when she just stepped into the country as she was to have her first client phone her.

Siblings Programme

This 5 years old girl used to be quite anxious but after 2 weeks on the “siblings programme” her teacher has noted something interesting. This is why we are proud to offer complementary listening training for family members in our individual home programmes. (Published with permission)

Hello Maria,

Just me bothering you again, but here is _____’s form.
I forgot to tell you in the earlier email that I had an interview with her teacher this afternoon regarding her 6 weeks at school testing. She is doing very, very well but the thing I found most interesting was that her teacher said that in the last 2 weeks ____ has really come out of her shell and is gaining confidence daily. Thought you would find that to be a point worth noting.

Kind regards

Phantom Nerve Pain Gone

Tomatis® is all about improving your brain’s ability to process information. Phantom nerve pain can be debilitating and in this case the Tomatis® Method helped our client process sensory information more accurately so that her pain and also overall sensitivity disappeared. Phantom Nerve Pain

Hi Maria,

It was lovely to speak to you.

One change in particular that I have noticed is, I am now able to sit down for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. It has been almost 9 years since I injured my back and the lingering problem has been not being able to sit down without severe lower back pain and numbness in parts of my legs. I was told it was phantom nerve pain from the old injury and I would just have to live with it…well…it has gone!!! I can sit for 2 hours and only get a slight twinge when I stand up, somewhere in the 2nd Block of 20 hours this happened. I have no numbness in my legs either. I am delighted.

Thank you so much to you and your wonderful team of people (Ingrid) for being amazing and supportive with allowing me to do the activities that my body feels it needs to do. I appreciate the chance to be able to listen and train for my Half-Marathon then a chance to revive a childhood talent and in the process make the discovery that I could sit down once again.

Warmest Regards
